Weekly meal plan: how to plan dinners in 5 minutes

Updated on

Five minutes with the meal plan on Sunday saves you the "what are we eating?" question every evening of the week. You also get one big shop instead of three trips, less food going off in the fridge and fewer arguments at the table. Here is how to build a weekly plan that actually survives family life.

Why a meal plan is worth it

Most families cook the same fifteen to twenty dishes again and again. The problem is rarely a lack of ideas, it is the moment at half past five when nobody has one. A plan makes that decision ahead of time.

  • One big shop a week instead of many small ones
  • Less food in the bin, because everything has a purpose
  • More variety, because you can see what you had recently
  • Calmer evenings, because the question is already answered

Step 1: Collect the dishes your family likes

Write down every dish that goes down well at home: spaghetti bolognese, chicken curry, fish fingers with mash, tacos, jacket potatoes, a Sunday roast. Ask everyone at the table, the kids too. Twenty dishes are enough for a month of variety.

It helps when every family member marks their favourites and says what they really do not like. Then dishes somebody refuses never make it onto the plan.

Step 2: Give the week a simple structure

Theme nights make planning almost automatic. Many families use a simple grid:

  • Monday: something quick, there is little time after the weekend
  • Tuesday: pasta in any form
  • Wednesday: vegetables or vegetarian
  • Thursday: leftovers or soup
  • Friday: pizza, fish or a takeaway style night at home
  • Saturday: something more elaborate when there is time
  • Sunday: a family classic or a roast

Step 3: Plan for real life

Check the calendar first: evenings with training, music lessons or long work days need dishes that are ready in twenty minutes or can be prepared ahead. Leave one evening free for leftovers or something spontaneous. And do not repeat a dish too soon, or even a favourite turns into a chore.

Step 4: Write the grocery list straight from the plan

Go through the plan day by day and note what is missing. Sorted by aisle (produce, dairy, meat, cupboard) the weekly shop is much faster. Whatever you already have at home, you cross off right away.

An example you can use as it is:

  • Monday: omelette with salad
  • Tuesday: spaghetti bolognese
  • Wednesday: vegetable curry with rice
  • Thursday: minestrone with bread
  • Friday: homemade pizza
  • Saturday: chicken fajitas
  • Sunday: roast chicken with potatoes

When you no longer want to write the plan yourself

That is exactly what Yadlo is for. The family rates dishes by swiping a card, and Yadlo plans this week and next from those ratings: favourites more often, dishes with a bad rating not at all, and nothing comes back too soon. The grocery list comes from the plan, and everyone in the family sees the same thing on their iPhone.
